"Blessed is the man
that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor standeth in the way of sinners,
nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD;
and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,
that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;
his leaf also shall not wither;
and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."
Psalm 1:1-3
What is the key to a tree growing well? Having plenty of water to sustain its growth. A tree planted by a river will definitely have plenty of water for its roots to tap into, providing the key nutrients it needs to thrive. But what about for the Christian? Do we need to tap into a "river" to get the "essentials" we need to strive? Most definitely! A tree without water will wither up and die; a Christian who is not tapped in also will not reach their full potential to which God designed for them. So how do we get plugged in? By daily spending time in the Word of God, frequent prayer, repenting of known sins, and keeping close fellowship with like-minded believers.
Just as a river is a constant source of water, the Word of God is a constant source for the child of God that never runs dry. Now, a tree is planted where it's planted; it has no control over where it gets planted. But we, as Christians, can choose whether to stay rooted in God's Word and in godly environments. Sin can take us away from that river and cause us to wander away from our river, and not live up to the full potential God has in store for us. So daily we must "plant" ourselves in the Word of God, go deep, and stay close to the River.
